There isn’t one universal answer to this question. For example, each borough of London has its own council, and each council sets their prices for the pest control services they offer.

Below you can see the data from all 30 London Borough Councils. These figures represent the standard, unsubsidised figures for each area’s average three-bedroom house.

Please note that councils have exceptionally long waiting lists, with some taking months to perform their first visit. If you need emergency pest control in London at a competitive price to the council, call Integrum on our free phone number 0204 566 5522.

If you receive benefits or live on a council-owned property, visit your local council’s pest control page for further information on the qualifying benefits and prices for different bands.

Are London Council Pest Control Services free?

Many councils have different bands they use to price pest control treatments. These typically include a bracket for those living in properties owned by the local council, one for those receiving qualifying benefits, and another for private tenants or owner-occupiers.

The qualifying benefits typically include:

  • Universal Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support
  • Council Tax Benefit
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Income-based Job seekers’ Allowance
  • Guaranteed Pension Credit

People are often mistaken and believe that all council services are provided free of charge to residents of that area. However, unless you are a council tenant, this is rarely true.

Council services are usually subsidised so that you may receive treatments at a slight discount. However, try to remain vigilant for the sneaky terms and conditions. For example, several council price lists specify the number of visits they will make or the number of rooms they will treat. These can be easy to miss, and you could end up paying much more overall to get rid of the pests in your home.

Also, on several council websites offering free pest control services, there is a clause where you will be charged if the technicians do not see any signs of a pest on your property!

Do all London Councils offer Pest Control Services?

We’ve looked at all 30 councils across the London boroughs, and most of them do offer pest control services. However, if you’re in one of the following areas, you’ll need to contact us to get rid of your pest problem.

  • Bexley London Borough Council
  • Havering London Borough Council
  • Hillingdon London Borough Council
  • Kingston upon Thames London Borough Council
  • Merton London Borough Council
  • Richmond upon Thames London Borough Council
  • Sutton London Borough Council

Do the Councils in London cover all pests?

No, not quite. While council pest control services cover most common pests like rats, mice, bedbugs and ants, most do not offer anything they consider to be ‘specialist’ services.

These specialist services tend to be for protected animals like bees, bats and species of birds. It’s also rare to see a council service offering woodworm treatments.

Despite being quite the problem across London, most council services will not deal with foxes. Therefore, if you’re experiencing issues with foxes in your London home, you will require the use of our specialist fox control services.

Council Vs Professional Pest Control in London

Ultimately a professional pest control service will be more thorough than a council pest control service. Due to the sheer number of jobs the council completes, they do not have the time to provide a detailed service that will guarantee a repeat infestation won’t appear. Other factors include:

Costs

Upon discovering a pest control problem in their home, many turn to the council for help as they believe their treatments are free of charge. However, as proved above, this is simply incorrect.

While some people are eligible for free or subsidised pest control services, most homes are not.

Almost all of the prices listed above are for a specified number of treatments/visits, leaving you with no guarantee that your home will be pest-free by the end of the treatment.

Most of the council websites have prices listed for further treatments required, so to entirely rid your home of pests, you could eventually spend much more using the services of a council pest controller than a professional!

Waiting Lists

One of the most significant disadvantages of using council services is the waiting times. If you live on council property, you’re more likely to be placed higher up the waiting list, but even then, it could be weeks. However, if you are not eligible for free or subsidised services, you’ve got an even longer wait ahead.

If you’ve ever had a pest problem in your home, you’ll know one thing: time is of the essence when dealing with pests.

Long wait times on council waiting lists could mean that one rat in your home soon becomes 30.
